A Omakase (Japanese: お任せ, Hepburn: o-makase) dining experience is a guarantee to be a unique experience for everyone. Omakase is the Japanese tradition of letting a chef choose your order. Omakase means “I’ll leave it up to you”.
Kaunta Restaurant at Tanjong Pagar reopened after the circuit breaker period with a surprise for everyone. The restaurant owners, the guys behind The Sushi Bar, decided to convert their menu into a full Omakase dining experience in June.
With a team of experienced sushi chefs behind the counter preparing the food for you, they will be sure to tell you the story of their speciality, their aged fish. Not many Japanese restaurants in Singapore can serve aged fish because you would need a true Sushi master to bring out the best taste and texture. Doing it wrongly will result in a spoiled product.
We were fortunate to have secured a table for dinner in this usually reserved hidden Japanese restaurant. We had the Omakase Iki Dinner set at $180 per person, which is very attractively priced for the experience and delicious menu.
The Omakase Iki Dinner set includes 2 Appetizers, 12 pieces of aged sushi, 2 seasonal dishes, Soup and Dessert. We were very full by the time we had our serving of the dessert.
We started off with the fresh oysters, prepared by the chefs behind the counter.
Check out the succulent oysters. It just melts in your mouth.
After that, we were served with the fried shishamo as our second appetizers. It was really crispy and delicious.
In between the dishes, we were served with 12 different aged fish sushi.
The highlight of the night were the two special seasonal dishes. The dishes were to rave for and the memory of the dish still lingers within our mind until today.
The first highlight was the smoked abalone which provided a nice presentation for video, providing a slow reveal of the smoked abalone.
The second and the main highlight was the braised beef which was the most tender beef that we have tasted before.
The braised beef was so good that we requested for rice on the side to go with the delicious dish.
A delicious clam miso soup was served to complement all the tasty food that we have just tasted.
To end the whole experience, we were served with dessert and seasonal fruits.
We would summarize the whole experience as unforgettable and value for money. We are already planning our next trip back together with our friends.
